Her daughter’s birthday had sealed the fate of the North.

Though she knew perfectly well that Erick was responsible for the situation, rather than Emily, she had to face the facts. That crystal had some inexplicable magical power, which hitherto had been unknown to her. So, she made all possible effort to find out anything she could, even the smallest piece of information, regarding the stone. She locked herself up in her small library, and asked Ser Jasmit and his most loyal soldiers to watch the castle, and report to her directly, should anything happen. She had sent out her spies before Erick had the gates shut. Incidentally, she could agree with this latter move. But for some reason, since the morning, she had had a sense of foreboding. The events at the feast had turned everything upside down. She needed all her strength to keep her control and her sanity. She had come across various legends about the crystal, but the sources could only make conjectures as to its origins. All glossaries linked it to the gods. When she tried to examine the crystal herself – she only ever got one chance to do so —, it displayed nothing apart from its amazing colours. It would not even produce a spark, let alone forces like those it created on Emily’s neck. However, for the time being, she did not want to involve her daughter in this matter. Then, suddenly, Erick would not let her near the crystal anymore… he said it was too dangerous. Jusek and his priests had attempted to destroy it – which proved to be a great foolishness – but, of course, all of their attempts had failed.

Even her spies could not get to it. On the other hand, they had discovered something else: the location of Eric’s clandestine meetings.

They were preparing for something. Emma knew that Erick’s men had been making copies of her notes for some time. She also knew that they attributed the strange occurrences to Maleck. But they could not get to what were the most important for her. It all had crossed a certain line for her a long time ago, but she had to keep pretending, if she wanted to carry out her plan. Still, it was very difficult to swallow her anger over how easily Jusek and Erick brushed her aside when serious decisions were to be made.

And Emily’s attempt to escape just added to her dismay. But Erick might be able to talk some sense into her daughter more proficiently than she had done a few hours earlier.

She was leafing through the book on southern legends again, when suddenly the door of the library swung open with such force that several books fell off the shelves.

‘My Queen!’ shouted Ser Jasmit. The knight was visibly upset.

‘Yes?’

‘You have to come at once!’

‘What’s this about?’ she asked, puzzled, then quickly gathered some notes, and put them in her coat pocket, together with her diary.

‘You told me to report anything unusual my men see or hear.
